Doggerel from Di

Written by Diane Hunter (our most senior member to sail on the Rage)

A maiden voyage on the Rage

An iffy venture for a gal of my age

(Of course maiden is a relative term

but poetic license has been earned)

For Captain Stafford and his motley crew

Age discrimination would never do

So into the hole I went with Cindy

A cozy place when it blows up windy.

She, an old hand, showed me the ropes

Said, keep your head down because those dopes

On deck when tacking and moving the pries

Will step on you and won’t hear your cries.

We had a good breeze and a pretty good start

And for an old racer that gives one heart

And off we sailed to round Garden Cay

Twice around and then home free.

The downwind leg called for lots of beer

And I then found out why I was here.

“Beer wench” is a  pretty good handle

But she can’t begin to hold a candle

To the stalwarts on the jib and the main

And the guys on the pries who suffer the pain

Of blood and sweat ; I saw no tears

But did see a lot of soggy rears.

I’m really glad I had the chance

To hear those guys do their noisy dance

Above my head but below the boom

While I was safe in that tiny room.

Then to top it all off at the Standup later

With fish ‘n’ chips from the Brits who cater,

It was announced “The Rage is the winner”

With that to feed on, who needs dinner?

(The last two lines are dedicated to race committee member, John Foster)

All hail the Abaco Rage crew.
